The Chronicles of Pfaff Motorsports ~ January 2021

Season Preview 2021

By Zacharie Robichon

2021 holds many question marks for many reasons. Not least caused by the fact that we are entering it in a lockdown in many of Canada’s biggest provinces. Question marks certainly surround what will happen in the next few weeks and months, but I am happy to say one of those question marks isn’t what myself and Pfaff Motorsports will be doing.

We are headed back for a full season of the IMSA Weathertech Championship in our GT3R. Of course, we will be bringing the Plaid back with our second-year title sponsor Motul. Preparation is slightly different this year with the Roar test happening one weekend prior to race instead of the traditional first weekend of the year. This allows those of us travelling from out of the country to limit our travel between countries and stay in Florida for the 10 days.

Additionally, the format has changed with qualifying for the race happening during the weekend of the roar, and it is a 1h 40 minute race! I believe this will help us more than other teams since we had such limited running in 2020.

The changes go beyond the format of the Roar for us. Porsche Factory Driver Laurens Vanthoor will be joining the team as my full season teammate for this season. Some may recognize the name from IMSA as he has spent the last few years running in the Porsche RSR in GTLM.

Among many other achievements, he has won the GTLM championship in 2019, the 24 Hours of Spa in 2020 and the 24 hours of Lemans in 2018. Needless to say, he has shown time and time again he has the pace and ability to win at the highest level. With Porsche withdrawing their factory effort from the GTLM class he became available to join our team.

Joining us for the Rolex 24 will be Porsche Factory Driver Matt Campbell, with whom we won at Road America in 2019 with, and for the 3 rd year in a row Porsche development Driver Lars Kern will share the car for all 4 endurance races. The season hasn’t started yet, but we’re excited to be back, and we’re making sure to have everything in place to push towards a championship.
